Sun and sangria = fun, but is also very dehydrating. It’s the oldest answer in the book for a reason. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it is so important to keep drinking water if you are drinking alcohol. A lot of us will forget this once we’re swept up in a party, but it’s a little effort to alternate every drink with a glass of water, for a lot of benefit.

Not on an empty stomach

Eating food beforehand (not after) slows the absorption of alcohol. Try and opt for a plant based dinner with some lean protein when you know you’ll be drinking. This Cajun Chicken with Mango Salsa and Avocado Salad from our cookbook The Detox Kitchen Bible is a real winner.

Juice ahead

Before you go out, prep a reviving juice for the morning (like this Mint, Kale and Cucumber Juice). For an extra boost add a couple of teaspoons of organic wheatgrass or spirulina to your juice. These nourishing powders are packed full of essential vitamins and minerals required by the body, enhancing your energy, radiance and endurance.

And if you wake up with a headache…

Make yourself some eggs! Eggs contain cysteine, a substance that can help break down acetaldehyde, a toxin associated with alcohol metabolism and hangovers. Place a pan of water on a high heat to boil. Gently place two eggs in the water and boil for 6 minutes for a soft boiled egg. Boil for up to 10 minutes if you prefer hard boiled. Peel the eggs and slice in half. Place an avocado in a bowl and mash it together with pumpkin seeds, salt and pepper. Serve with the eggs and a big slice of toast.
